I
want to start
driving a tractor trailer right away. How long does it take to complete
most Utah
truck driving
schools?
Depending on the school you choose to attend in Utah, your
training
should last anywhere from three to five weeks.
Be cautious of any schools that
are only 21 days or less; they may not
provide the comprehensive training you will need to become a
professional truck
driver.
How much does a
typical truck driving school cost?
Most truck driving schools cost
between $2,000 and $3,000. If
that sounds like a lot to you, not to
worry: many schools offer great payment plans, financial assistance, or
sponsored training. We
can even help you
find a Utah
truck driving company to work for after you have completed training
that offers
tuition reimbursement.
Is truck driving
school just classroom instruction or do I get to drive an actual
commercial
semi?
You need to pass a written exam and a driving test to
qualify for a CDL, so an accredited Utah
truck driving school will help prepare you for both. Students typically
receive
at least 40 hours of driving time as you attend a truck driving school.
Where
are most Utah
truck driving
schools located?
Most Utah truck
driving
schools are located in or around Salt Lake City,
but there are schools throughout the entire
state. If you live in rural Utah,
you may have to live away from home while you attend school. Most will
schools
arrange for discount hotel rates for students who need a place to stay
during
their training.
I don't own my own
tractor and trailer. Can I still get a commercial driver's license?
Yes. You will need a tractor and trailer to take the road
test, but they are often provided by the truck driving school you
attend.
Sometimes the use of the truck comes with tuition, while other schools
require
you to rent the truck for your test.
Is the road test the
only test I have to pass to obtain my CDL?
No. You must also pass a pre-trip
inspection, as well as a written exam. In
addition, you will be required to pass a physical exam and a drug test
before
you qualify for a CDL.
Are
you required to
renew your CDL license?
Yes, you must renew your license every few years. Check with your local
DMV for
the details.
Do you need to have
your CDL license for several years before you qualify for endorsements?
No. To qualify for a tank, double/triple, air brake, or
hazardous materials endorsement, you must receive appropriate training
and pass
all required exams. Once
you have done
that, you will be able to receive your intended endorsements, no matter
how
long you have been driving.
Are there any special
requirements for any of the endorsements?
Because of the Patriot Act, anyone who applies for a
hazardous materials endorsement must pass a fingerprint check and a
background
check. You are required to pay for both the background check and
fingerprint
check.
